Council Tax Reduction

Paying full Council Tax? You may not need to.

If you are on a low income or get benefits like Universal Credit, your local council may reduce your Council Tax bill. Many of our clients pay full Council Tax without knowing they can apply.

How it works

Council Tax Reduction (sometimes called Council Tax Support) is run by your local council, not DWP. Each council has its own scheme, so the amount depends on where you live.

You can apply whether you rent or own your home, and whether you work or not.

What the council looks at

Your reduction depends on:

  • where you live
  • your household income, including savings and your partner’s income
  • how many children live with you
  • whether other adults live with you
  • your benefits and residency status

Universal Credit does not do this for you

Getting Universal Credit does not automatically reduce your Council Tax. You have to apply to the council separately.
