FAQ
Questions we get every day.
Are you part of the government or DWP?
No. Alekows is an independent service. The government decides your claim and pays you. We help you apply correctly and deal with it in your language.
Who can get Universal Credit?
Usually people who live in the UK, are 18 or over, are under State Pension age and have £16,000 or less in savings. You can be working or not working. EU citizens may also need settled or pre-settled status.
How long until the first payment?
Usually around 5 weeks. If you need money before that, you can ask for an advance, and we can help with it.
Can I work and still get Universal Credit?
Yes. There is no limit on hours. Once any work allowance has been used, Universal Credit normally goes down by 55p for each £1 of earnings. Your overall income depends on your full circumstances.
Do I need to come to an office?
No. We do everything with you over WhatsApp. The jobcentre may still ask you to attend an appointment, and we prepare you for it.
How much does it cost?
A new Universal Credit claim is £300, paid before we start. For anything else we tell you the price first, and you decide.
Can I travel to Bulgaria or Turkey while on Universal Credit?
You must report any time you go outside Great Britain, for any length of time. Some trips can affect your payment. Tell us your dates before you book and we will explain what to report.
I got a letter I do not understand. Can you help?
Yes. Send us a photo on WhatsApp and we will explain it in your language and tell you what to do next.
Do you give immigration advice?
No. We help with benefits only. Questions about your immigration status need a regulated immigration adviser.
Is my information safe?
We only use the information you send us to help with your case. Never send passwords or bank card numbers by message to anyone, including us.
